In order to make it easier for you, and to speak the same language, we put together a cheat sheet of "useful infos" related to our job!
Stevedoring
Process of transport, handling the loading and unloading parts of the goods from the boat to the wharf.
Terminal operator
(also known as stevedore) The person who is responsible of operating the stevedoring process, i.e., handling of the goods from the boat to the wharf.
Shipping Agent
Designated by the Ship-owner for the commercial part of the process. This agent ensures the freight follow up and coordination for the loading and unloading of the goods.
Ship-Owner
Person/Company which ensure the financing of the boat, fuel and goods in transit (can be the owner or not).
Consignee
Designated by the ship-owner to assist the Captain, for managing all the administrative processes needed with the concerned Port. The consignee is the one receiving the goods for loading and the one in charge of submitting them upon unloading.
Authorised customs agent
Anyone physically or morally, having the profession of undertaking for others the customs formalities regarding the detailed declaration of goods.
Freight forwarder
This person/company is responsible of organizing all the transport follow up.
Proxy/Trustee
Acknowledge receipt of the goods or return back the goods to the ship.
Unloading
Action of stripping a container;
Loading
Process of loading the container with the goods;
NVOCC
Intermediary sea freight agent which does not really possess any ship but act as an ship-owner (it rent spaces on ships owned by real ship-owners).
RO/RO
Roll on, Roll off Technique of combined transport permitting a road vehicle already loaded with the goods to embark on a boat specially designed for such operation.
